The Rotary Foundation

Think of a problem in the world, and the Rotary Foundation is dealing with it somewhere. It could be feeding the hungry, providing safe drinking water, putting desks and chairs in schools or proper toilets, lighting the homes in a village, providing wheel chairs for those who can't walk, providing health care, dental work, helping people to see - and the list goes on and on. Rotarians throughout the world watch over the use of the Foundation funds so that contributors can be certain it is well and appropriately used.

Our Rotary District needs your help in raising funds for the annual giving to the Rotary Foundation. If you have not talked recently about supporting the Rotary Foundation, now is another time to bring it to the attention of Club members. Some may also be interested in finding out about, and supporting the Foundation's Permanent Fund. Also, PolioPlus needs our attention. Have you had a fund-raiser for PolioPlus? We all have to take responsibility to ensure that this important Rotary initiative is completed this year. There is still a long way to go.

We have many excellent speakers in our District who are willing to go anywhere to talk about these topics. I can help you locate someone, or you can work from the list I sent out to the Club Presidents in November. How can I support you? Please let me know. It is important to give every member in your club the opportunity to personally support the Rotary Foundation and, this year, PolioPlus. The money raised for the Foundation this year will be used in 2005-2006. In the meantime it will be invested and the returns used for administrative costs so that the full amount raised goes to the work of the Foundation.

Our District leadership has a direct say over how 60% of the funds are spent for the various Rotary initiatives around the world, or even here at home. Let's remind our members once again to consider giving to the Foundation. Every amount counts and is important. Some people say - think of some of the ways that you use extra money you have - for entertainment, travel, dining out, etc., and perhaps put the cost of an evening's entertainment into the Foundation. But, each person knows his or her own circumstances and must decide what she or he can do. But, as Rotary Leaders, it is our duty to bring to the attention of all our members this important work.

Please be in touch if you have any advice for me or if you need any help.

Sincerely, Garth Toombs,

Chair District 5360 Rotary Foundation
